When you’re running an online business, you’re surrounded by so much noise. Every day, we are bombarded with so many articles and posts telling us how we can improve our business strategy and take our business to the next level that it’s hard to filter all that information, shut down all that noise and just check in with yourself.

Recently, one of the guests on our podcast Christine Means Business was Kevin Palmieri, the co-founder of Next Level University and we talked about Starting a Podcast to Help You Grow Your Business. I was so amazed with this conversation that I had to invite the other half of Next Level University, Alan Lazaros, and have him on our podcast as well.

As I mentioned, Alan is the co-founder and co-host of Next Level University, a global top 100 self-improvement podcast with more than 850 episodes, reaching over half a million people in more than 100 countries. He believes in a heart-driven but no BS approach to inspiring, motivating, and educating others on what it really takes to get to the next level. It is his mission to help others maximize their potential and design lives and businesses they love on their own terms.

From living the dream to focusing on what really matters

After getting his Bachelor’s in Electrical & Computer Engineering and MBA in Business, Alan decided to go the corporate route. Pretty soon, he was living “the dream”, making almost $200,000 a year. Then, when he was 26 he got into a nearly fatal car accident that made him question his whole life. He came to a realization that the life he was living wasn’t true to himself, so he decided to make a huge shift and to focus on what really matters.

He decided to focus on his own personal development and soon, he partnered up with Kevin on a business endeavor that eventually became the Next Level University

One of the things that helps Alan the most in protecting himself from overworking is the structure he incorporates into his day. He divides his day into thirds:

  • The first third is his morning routine. This is the time he dedicates to his own self-improvement
  • The second third is all about service. So from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. is when he does all of his coaching, consulting, speaking and podcasting
  • The last third is dedicated to fitness, family and food. Every day, at 7 p.m. Alan is at the gym for a quick workout, followed by dinner with his girlfriend and spending time with his family

Creatures of habit

Alan is a firm believer that humans are creatures of habit, and as such, we need structure and systems implemented into our everyday life so that we can truly improve ourselves in all aspects. The philosophy behind the Next Level University is 1% improvement per day. Alan explains that If you can get 1% better every day for a full year, you’re 37 times better at the end of that year. And if you keep doing that for another year, you’re 37 times better than that. So, it’s all about making those small changes that over time add up.

Alan uses this same approach with his business. The Next Level University business model has 24 layers and a virtual team of 14 people. Each one of those team members leads their own department and keeps track of their own key performance indicator (KPI). The team meets every Wednesday to go over each department’s performance and rate it from 0 to 10. If they improved in the previous week, they go up 0.1; if they haven’t improved, they go down 0.1. Then all of those 24 departments are summated to give Alan a percentage and that’s his KPI.

Mastery, impact, and profitability

For Alan and Kevin, it’s all about mastery, impact, and profitability. Even though they know it’s an infinite game that never really ends, that is their main focus.

When thinking about self-improvement, Alan explains that it really all comes down to your goals. If your goals dictate your journey, and if you choose the right goals, the lifestyle that comes as a byproduct of those goals will help you maximize your potential

If you are ready to go on a self-improvement journey yourself, but are not sure where to start, Alan has just the thing for you. What It Takes to Get to the Next Level is a free course created by Alan and Kevin that is based on five Cs: clarity, commitment, confidence, community and consistency that will help you get to the next level.
